Messaging is easy, fast and convenient to multitask. Actually, messaging apps allow people to keep in touch with families and friends even if they are far away or near, gossip about acquaintances and coordinate a meeting or an invitation.

Social media is an useful way to get the latest updates about different topics: fashion, sports, politics, etc., and share them with relatives and friends.

Negative aspects

Messaging apps and social media have become a problem to schools, jobs and families because children, teenagers and young adults do not pay attention to their assignments and they do not enjoy establishing relationships face to face.

In schools, students do not focus on their classes because they are usually using their cellphones. In jobs, employers are not actives enough. And in a daily routine, people use cellphones in the streets, buses and at home when they are eating and taking a break.

In addition, texting and using cell phones during the day can cause people bad effects on their grammar skills and communication in person and an excessive exposure time could affect their health, especially the eyes.

A double-edged weapon

In my view, technology is a double-edged weapon, it can give us great benefits but at the same time, it can cause terrible effects or issues. All depends on the way how people use technology.

A research from the Nielsen Company informed that adults in U.S.A spent around 11 hours each day, listening, watching, reaching and interacting with media.

An excessive use of devices like computer, cell phone, tablet or television, during the day causes muscular pain, eye fatigue, hearing problems, stress, insomnia, etc. On the other hand, people stay sitting or in a bad position, this situation can increase the overweight. In most cases, people affected are children and teenagers.

When you provide your personal information in different websites for example banks, social media, emails, online stores. There could be 2 consequences:

  1. Hackers can use it for stealing you.
  2. Your personal information will be saved in public web sites which organizations or different kind of people access and we do not have what they do with that.

Technology and Internet has become a necessity for everybody. However, there are people who can not access due to economic problems because Internet service and a new device are expensive.

Robert Weiss, co-author of Closer together, further apart mentioned that technology could be a problem when it let people did not take responsibility for their action.

Technology can affect work and life balance because when you spend hours using digital devices, in your job for example you are not going to be focus on your must and in your personal life you are going to waste important time with your family and your family. Usually, people who use excessively technology and internet to messaging and catch up with their friends in social media, when they are going to interact face to face do not have the same abilities.

If I were a teacher nowadays, I would encourage students to enjoy real life doing different activities to spend special time with their friends and family for example eating in a restaurant, watching a movie, shopping, doing exercise, traveling. And I would propose a digital detox which students would set limits on their connections time, they could learn that when they are studying, eating, going to bed and sharing with family and friends they do not have to check their cell phones every 2 minutes.

How can we avoid the addiction to messaging apps and social media?

Digital detox is the answer in order to avoid these kind of addictions.

It means that when you arrive home, you might not use your cell phone for a period of time while you could spend me time doing exercise, relaxing, studying, staying with your family.

Digital detox reduces stress, improves your sleep habits, allows a good life balance.
